Some of you have heard there has been a "ban" on peanut butter in such states as Virginia and New York. This is a not a strong ban but more of a suggestion to parents of school age children. They have been asked to stop sending their children to school with PB&J's because of the nut allergy that some kids have. Not only have they been asked not bring this American classic to school but the children who sign a pledge saying they will participate in this get a plaque with their name on it and it is placed on a wall of the school. Some may think that I am being unsympathetic and that I don't realize how serious peanut allergies are. Maybe I don't realize the severity of it, but how far must we go to make us all the same. What happened to teaching your child with the allergy to not share their lunch with another child. Children can die from bee stings does that mean we ban bees. We can't ban bees. What about the child who is too poor to bring anything other than peanut butter sandwiches to school is he going to get made fun of for not signing the ban. Why can't they just send out a memo to all the parents saying that there are some children with peanut allergies and ask them to send their children with a different sandwich or send them with the PB&j but hold the PB, it's that simple. I don't know where this peanut hate is coming from. Did you know that they actually have a "no peanut zone" at baseball games, that is like having apple pie without the pie, lame. Oh the hate is too much.
My real frustration isn't with the allergy concerned parents but that I feel the schools are trying to make us all the same. I don't want to be the same. I don't even like other people why would I want to be like them. I believe we are all made different and that is the way God intended it and it is good that way. I like being me and I like being different. Think of the message in KungFu Panda, he was a fat panda who's motivation is food, what is wrong with that who says his motivation has to be to safety from the evil one. I am glad that he was different or the movie would not have been cool.
I love Kung Fu Panda. There is no charge for awesomeness... or attractiveness. Which is why I don't charge for my advice... it's free. Anyway, I totally agree with you on the ridiculousness of banning peanut butter. My nephew's pre-school banned peanut butter for the same reason. Whatever happened to common sense? Teach your child not to share their food. It's probably a good idea anyway because you never know what kind of germs are lurking in someone else's kitchen, or whether they made that root beer in their bathtub after they gave the dog a scrub down (true story). Anyway, I hate how rules are being set forth to cater to a small minority, leaving the rest of us with the short end of the stick. It's assanine! I do realize that allergies are a serious thing, but we just need to use common sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat's next? Banning peanut butter does NOT solve the issue. Education is the best deterant. There can be nut oil in food items without nuts. Which one of 'those' food items will be on the next ban list?
ReplyDeleteI think it ridiculous too, but it's not just sharing the PB, if a child with a severe peanut allergy even touch a surface that has PB on it, or a kid has PB on their hand and they touch them they can go into anaphylactic shock and die if teacher don't respond with a trigger shock fast enough. I have family members with severe allergies and it sucks for them way more than the kids who maybe have to wait until after school to eat their PBJ.
ReplyDeleteThat is lame! I had not heard that! I am with you on this one! Hello...what is this world coming to!! (Well we know that answer!) This is plain stupidity on the behalf of the school officials!
ReplyDeleteCarree, I am proud of you for taking a stance on your point of view. I missed you last night at the yogart place. I heard you weren't feeling well, that is sad.
